August 11, 2010: Countdown to Departure

We are excited! Christine, Lily and I will leave on Sunday morning to begin our 4-week adventure in Granada! With only 4 days to go, we are frantically gathering donations of clothing and other basic human needs items to take with us. For anyone who doesn't know, Los Pipitos is a nonprofit organization in Nicaragua that serves children with disabilities and their families. We will be working to establish a long-term partnership with our College of Nursing and Los Pipitos to enable faculty and students to have experiences there in the future.

Granada, Nicaragua
What will we do? Los Pipitos has a school and a clinic that serve individuals with disabilities. We will work in the clinic, assessing the children's health and working with their parents to establish care plans that the parents can implement between visits from health care professionals.

Our main purpose for this trip is to do a needs assessment for future trips. We will find out how our faculty and students can best be of service in the years to come. Our hope is that we can provide service to the Los Pipitos community and at the same time have the benefit to our students of the global health experience abroad.

Look for our posts in the weeks ahead!
